Our Story

For more than 25 years, the Alice Springs Reptile Centre has been introducing visitors from around the world to the incredible reptiles that call the Northern Territory home. Through hands-on encounters, engaging presentations, and memorable experiences, we've helped thousands of people discover that reptiles are far more fascinating than they first imagined.

Where It All Began

The Alice Springs Reptile Centre was founded in 2000 by Rex Neindorf, who transformed a run-down house into the unique reptile facility it has become today. With six months of hard work, determination, and the support of friends, Rex laid the foundations for what would grow into one of Central Australia's most loved wildlife facilities.

Growing Through The Years

Since opening its doors, the Reptile Centre has continued to grow and evolve, with each new addition enhancing the experience for both our animals and visitors.

One of our biggest milestones came in 2002 with the arrival of Terry the Saltwater Crocodile. Since then, Terry has become one of our most iconic and much-loved residents.

In 2006, the Centre expanded with the addition of a Fossil Cave through a government initiative. The exhibit reimagined in 2010 as the Gecko Cave, transforming the space into an immersive showcase of geckos native to the Northern Territory.

A New Chapter

In February 2026, Rex passed the torch to long-term Centre manager Christabel Moschetti and tourism professional Kelly Bailey, marking the beginning of an exciting new chapter for the Alice Springs Reptile Centre.

With a shared passion for reptiles, conservation, and education, their vision is to continue inspiring visitors through meaningful wildlife encounters, enhancing the welfare of animals in their care, strengthen the Centre's role in conservation, and ensure the Reptile Centre remains a must-see destination for generations to come.

Why We Exist

Reptiles are among Australia's most misunderstood animals. For many people, they're something to fear, but we believe understanding leads to appreciation, and appreciation leads to conservation.

Every day, we have an opportunity to change the way people see reptiles. Whether it's holding a python for the first time, watching a lizard bask in the  sun, or learning why snakes are so important to healthy ecosystems, these moments create lasting connections between people and wildlife.

That's why our tagline is Turning Fear Into Fascination. It's more than just a slogan - it is the purpose behind everything we do.

Our Vision

We envision a future where the Alice Springs Reptile Centre is recognised not only as one of Australia's leading reptile attractions, but also as a centre for conservation, research, and education.

As we grow, our goals include supporting threatened species conservation, developing captive breeding populations, contributing to scientific research, and working alongside universities, wildlife organisations, and government agencies to advance reptile knowledge and conservation.

Every step we take is guided by one simple goal: creating a future where people and reptiles thrive together.

Our Mission

At the Alice Springs Reptile Centre, our mission is to connect people with the remarkable reptiles of the Northern Territory through immersive education, meaningful encoutners, and a commitment to conservation.

We believe reptiles deserve understanding, respect, and protection. Through engaging presentations and hands-on experiences, we inspire curiosity while helping visitors discover the important role reptiles play in Australia's unique ecosystems.

Behind every encounter is a bigger purpose - to continually improve animal welfare, support conservation initiatives, contribute to scientific research, and create experiences that inspire lifelong appreciation for wildlife.
